Canvas Integration Guide

Introduction

Welcome to the HelioCampus - Canvas Integration Guide. This guide outlines the requirements for integrating HelioCampus Assessment and Credentialing with Canvas. A Canvas Administrator, working alongside your HelioCampus implementation team, can complete the setup.

Data Feed Requirements

To ensure proper data flow, the Course Section File in the nightly data feed must include the Course SIS ID in the ExternalLmsId field.

Steps to Complete the Integration

1. HelioCampus Assessment and Credentialing LMS Information Form

Please use the HelioCampus Assessment and Credentialing LMS Information Form to provide the necessary details for LMS integration. You will gather these elements as you step through the guide. We recommend opening the form in a separate tab or window as you work through the integrations

LMS Integration Troubleshooting

If you are having issues after HelioCampus informs you that the integration is complete within HelioCampus Assessment and Credentialing, the following will assist you in resolving common LMS-HelioCampus integration issues. For additional support, please have your institution admins submit a support ticket via the portal.

Issue: Course Sections Not Accessible / Assignments Not Syncing

HelioCampus receives Course Section information through data files, mapping the SIS ID field from Canvas to ExternalLMSID in HelioCampus.

Steps to Resolve:
  1. Log into Canvas.

  2. Navigate to the course section settings.

  3. Confirm that the SIS ID in Canvas matches the ExternalLMSID in HelioCampus.

  4. If mismatched, coordinate with your institution’s LMS administrator to ensure correct data mapping.

Example SIS IDs:

  • EDU 261 400 - ExternalLMSID: 2831e339-512b-4b5f-86eb-ecf361377bb8

  • EDU 261 401 - ExternalLMSID: 67362495-4c92-4e8f-b42a-ccef63b28401

Issue: "Invalid Access Token" Error When Refreshing Assignments

This error occurs due to an expired authorization token required for API integration.

Steps to Resolve:
  1. Notify the HelioCampus A&C team via support ticket.

  2. The team will delete the expired token.

  3. The LMS service account must be re-authorized.

  4. Follow the Authorize Service Account guide for re-authorization.

Note: The LMS Administrator or an Institutional Administrator must complete this step.
