Supported LMS Assignments

Product Tip

Supported LMS assignments is a separate functionality from supported assignment submission types for Juried Assessment. To learn about what assignment submission types are supported for Juried Assessment, review the Juried Assessment article.

Assignment support can vary by capability level, depending on the LMS and LTI integration. LMS settings can reduce the amount of usable detail an integration can read, resulting in partial support for some LMS data. HelioCampus can only import what an LMS exposes to integrations. Institutions submitting support tickets regarding LMS assignments should include the following in the ticket details:

  • LMS name + whether it’s a legacy/newer tool type (if applicable)

  • Course identifier and section(s) impacted (and any visible SIS/LMS IDs), along with the Course Section code + title and term information (e.g., BUS 101-01 – Introduction to Business).

  • Screenshots of the activity settings (publish/visibility + rubric attachment)

  • What was expected to link to (whole score vs rubric dimension vs question), and the expected data that’s unavailable? For example, if an assignment is scored in the LMS but the scores in the platform’s assessment data can’t be seen, it would be helpful to know which assignment the issue is happening with.

info The Technical Implementation Knowledge Library can be reviewed for LMS integration guides and further guidance on integration requirements.

Considerations

  • Integration and SIS Import: Each course section must have a unique identifier (ExternalLMSID) in SIS import files to map assignments and import the correct data. LMS integration must be enabled and properly configured (with LTI, API, or REST, as required).

  • Term Activation: Assignments must be created and, in most cases, published in the LMS, with names that match across terms to enable auto-import after term activations.

  • LMS Formatting Requirements: For features like rubric criteria linking, assignments must have associated rubrics, and those rubrics must meet LMS-specific formatting requirements.

  • Edits Can Change What’s Available. Renaming is usually low-impact; structural changes (e.g., rubric changes or quiz structure changes) can be high-impact.

  • Not All LMS Changes Are Immediately Reflected: If changes were made in the LMS, they will appear in the platform after the next data import. Some components may not be available until the activity is published or until student submissions/grades are available.

  • Assignment Linking:

    • If assignments are renamed or replaced, Institutions should validate assignment linking.

    • If courses are copied from term to term, activity identifiers may change depending on the LMS; Institutions should verify assignment linking after copying.

Best Practices

  • Attach rubrics before linking and avoid swapping rubrics mid-term if rubric criteria are being used for assessment.

  • Use unique, descriptive rubric criterion names to make selection easier.

  • Finalize structure first (rubric, points, etc.) before performing assignment linking.

Troubleshooting

Assignment or Quiz not appearing in the platform.
  1. Confirm the correct course/activity or section is being viewed in the platform

  2. Confirm the activity is available/visible to the integration - published, not in draft, and not restricted beyond what the integration can access.

  3. Verify the section mapping is correct (especially when multiple sections exist).

  4. If the LMS supports multiple versions/types (e.g., “classic” vs “new”), confirm the assignment or quiz was created in the supported version.

After performing the above, if the assignment or quiz is still not available in the platform, please contact Support.

Assignment linking can be performed, but rubric criteria aren't available.
  1. Verify that a rubric is attached in the LMS.

  2. Verify rubric criteria have point values/required configuration.

  3. Confirm the LMS supports criterion-level linking (vs. whole-assignment only).

After performing the above, if the rubric criteria are still not available in the platform, please contact Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the assignment need to be published?

Yes. For all LMS integrations, assignments must be created and published in the LMS.

Can individual questions be linked to?

This depends on the LMS and item assignment type. Review the LMS-specific section for more information.

If a rubric is changed after assignment linking, what happens?

Assignment links could be affected, and linking should be validated.
